Lisa's trip to Thailand and Singapore

Khao Lak, Elephant Hills and Krabi

After first going back to Vietnam for a few nights, this time to the busy bustling Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) to see our son, we then flew to Phuket and enjoyed a relaxing few days on the beach in Khao Lak. Staying at the lovely beachfront property of Ramada Resort by Wyndham . Bed & breakfast is fine to do here as there are so many lovely restaurants within walking distance to try a different one every night. The food in Thailand is amazing and there is something for everybody, even the fussiest of eaters.

From here there is the opportunity to do a boat trip across to the Similan Islands, an established National Park with impressive limestone scenery both above and below the water.

From Khao Lak, we were then picked up by minibus and transported a couple of hours to Khao Sok National Park, where we were staying at The Elephant Camp at Elephant Hills . Staying in tented accommodation (but with flushing toilets and showers!) we had the chance to get up close, stroke and feed the elephants at the camp that have been rescued from various places throughout Thailand. Surrounded by stunning scenery, this was an amazing experience.

Our second night at Elephant Hills was 3 hours journey away from the Elephant Camp, by road and boat. Staying at The Lake Camp on Cheow Larn Lake, once again in tented accommodation but over the water. Here we had a couple of relaxing days spent kayaking, swimming, wildlife and bird spotting and paddle boarding amongst more amazing scenery.

After Elephant Hills we then had a private transfer down to Krabi where we spent a few nights on the bustling Ao Nang Beach. This resort is very different to the quieter Khao Lak with lots of tourist shops, bars, hotels, hostels etc. It was a great place to experience the tourist side of Thailand. There are many boat excursions from here across to the Phi Phi Islands, Maya Bay (where ‘The Beach’ was filmed), Hong Lagoon etc where more limestone pinnacles and islands can be seen.

The final couple of nights were spent in Singapore. Very different to both Vietnam and Thailand (and a lot more expensive!). Singapore is a very modern, clean city with 8 lane roads, skyscrapers and shopping malls. We enjoyed visiting the iconic ‘Raffles Hotel’ where we, of course, each had a famous ‘Singapore Sling’ cocktail. We went up to the viewing deck at Marina Bay Sands with fantastic views across the city (or 2 of us did!) and we experienced one of the nightly concerts at Supertree Grove in Gardens By the Bay .

All in all Asia is such a diverse continent and we have only just scratched the surface.’

Lisbon City Break

Alison's City Break to Lisbon

Day 1

We arrived in Lisbon after a short flight from Manchester to Lisbon with Ryanair. After just a 30 minute private transfer we arrived at the lovely hotel – Browns Boutique Hotel in the Baixa area in the heart of Lisbon. Breakfast was included but this was taken at its sister hotel – Browns Central Hotel over the road. There was a great selection at breakfast and all the staff were very pleasant. They gave us a map of the city and lots of tips on getting a Lisbon Travel card to use on all public transports- bus/trams etc.

Our first stop was at the Time out Market. Selling all different types of food and drinks to suit everyone’s taste, it had a great bustling atmosphere.

En-route we strolled down Pink Street, which is a vibrant street and famous for its colourful hanging umbrellas. It is a trendy spot with lots of bars and restaurants and the odd local busker.

We chose to go up a Funicular (Gloria), as it has great views at the top and all the buildings are painted in pinks and blues very pretty. There is a square overlooking the city and lots of Market huts selling drinks and snacks.

Day 2

We took the hours train journey to Cascais. This town is a charming beach side town with a pretty harbour and plenty of shops bars and restaurants to browse around.

On the way back from Cascais we also stopped off at the must see town of Belem, brimming with history and culture. There you can visit many attractions including Belem Tower, Cathedral and Belem Palace. Oh, and you must try the local custard tart, “Pateis de Belem” sold in lots of cafes and delightful pastry shops.

Day 3

We took the 40 minute tram ride to the old town Alfama- we joined the tram at Martin Moniz , which I feel is the best location to join the tram as it gets very busy. It takes you through the old neighbourhoods of Graca, Alfama and Baixa- great scenery of the Cathedrals and Castles- hold on tight as it does go quite fast down some of the routes.

Lisbon is a great city, and I could have stayed a few more days as there is lots to see and do, will definitely be returning soon.

Montreux, Switzerland.

A Short Break With a Difference

As my hubbie had a significant birthday this year, I treated him to a few days in Montreux, Switzerland in September.

It was somewhere I had always wanted to go, since watching the Montreux Rock Festival on television as a teenager in the 80’s. Also, as John is a big Queen fan, and it is where Queen recorded their albums for many years, between 1978 and 1995, I decided it would be a good place to visit for his big birthday celebration.

I booked a lake view room at the lakeside Golf Hotel, just a short walk from Montreux town centre. We enjoyed first class rail from Geneva Airport straight to Montreux and then just a short taxi ride from the station.

On arrival at our hotel, the view from our balcony of Lac Leman (Lake Geneva) and the mountains beyond, didn’t disappoint.

The icing on the cake was that there was a Queen Festival on all weekend, celebrating what would have been Freddie’s 78th birthday, so there were lots of bands playing, stalls, tribute acts etc, inside and outside all weekend.

The Queen Studio Experience, in what was the famous Mountain Studios, is now open to the public (free to enter), inside the Casino in Montreux. This casino, incidentally, burnt down in 1971, during a concert, inspiring the famous Deep Purple song, ‘Smoke on the Water’.

We visited the Queen Studio Experience, seeing a lot of the outfits worn by the band, records and memorabilia, as well as visiting the famous lakeside statue of Freddie Mercury.

The town of Montreux is a lovely lakeside town with a pedestrianised walkway all along the front, right up to Chillon Castle, which we walked up one afternoon, and enjoyed a tour of the castle.

There are many shops, ice-cream stalls, bars and restaurants to visit in the town.

There is also the Charlie Chaplin Museum, just outside Montreux, again easily accessible by train or bus.

The trains all over Switzerland provide an excellent service, departing and arriving bang on time, every time.

As walkers, we were both looking forward to getting up some of the higher mountains, but the bonus for me is that we caught the train most of the way up and then walked down ��. We had a discount on the trains, buses and boats whilst we were there, as part of our package, as well as discounts into many attractions, including Chillon Castle.

Although Switzerland isn’t the cheapest of destinations, it is a beautiful country, and I would highly recommend a visit. We booked a package which included breakfast and dinner in the hotel, first class rail transfers and discounted transport and entry fees whilst there. So all-in all, it was well worth the money.

Lake Garda & Venice

Poiano Resort, Lake Garda

Nicola and her family enjoyed their summer holiday at Poiano Resort , Lake Garda this August

The resort has amazing views of the lake and offers great facilities including an Olympic-sized swimming pool.

The hotel runs a free shuttle bus into Garda frequently throughout the day/evening.

Garda is one of the main resorts at the southern end of Italy’s largest lake. You can walk along the picturesque lakeside promenade to Bardolino and Lazise

A pleasant and relaxing way to explore Lake Garda is by boat, you can either travel rapidly from one place to another on board a hydrofoil or catamaran or enjoy the peace and quiet of the lake on one of the slower pleasure boats .

There are many restaurants and bars to choose from, along with cobbled streets lined with shops .

The cuisine of Lake Garda is based on the use of local fresh local products – pasta, risotto, meat, fish and desserts you are spoiled for choice which deciding what to eat.

From Garda you can easily travel around using the buses that run from the main bus station in Garda .

Verona

We visited the beautiful city of Verona for the day by bus.

We spent the day wondering round the city , and of course visited the famous Romeo and Juliet balcony.

We also visited Venice for the day, there is lots to see in this beautiful unique city – Rialto bridge and St Marks square are not to be missed .

We really enjoyed our Gondola ride along the scenic waterways.

Gardaland and Caneva waterpark are also great family days out and easily accessible from Garda.

I would highly recommend a holiday to Lake Garda , there is so much to do and see , we had an amazing family holiday here .

Emma’s Mediterranean Cruise on P&O Arvia

Having got married in March, we decided to take a Mediterranean Cruise on board P&O’s Arvia as our honeymoon, later in the year.

Cruise Ports

The ports we visited included La Coruna, Barcelona, Alicante, Marseille and Cadiz.

I loved all of the ports – Marseille for the authentic French windy streets.

The hustle and bustle of busy Barcelona and its colourful markets.

Cadiz really surprised me and was one of my favourite places. An old city full of architecture. We spent the day just walking through the narrow streets, taking in the sites and drinking coffee in the pavement cafes.

P&O Cruise Ship – Arvia

Arvia was a huge ship.

During the day, when not in port, we relaxed by the pool. There are hot tubs all over the decks so you could relax and watch the dolphins swim by close to the ship.

There is plenty happening on board, with enough to keep you occupied all day and night, if you wanted it. From the Aqua zone, Splash Valley, the on-deck Sports Arena and mini golf to the spa, nightclub, and much more.

The food is amazing and there is lots of choice. From the 6th Street Diner, where you can get breakfast, lunch and dinner, through to Sindhu, where the menu is inspired by India’s diverse regional
specialities.

The evening shows were amazing, something different every night from West End style shows, comedy acts, singers, and acrobats!

All in all, I would highly recommend a Mediterranean Cruise and in particular, P&O.

Alison’s Brilliant Bali Holiday

50th Birthday Bali Holiday!

We had planned to take a holiday to Bali in 2020 for my husband’s 50 ^th birthday, but, due to Covid, we had to cancel. Three years later, and for another big birthday, we finally got there, and it was well worth waiting for.

Here is a review of my trip.

DUBAI

We started the celebrations by having a couple of nights stopover in Dubai on the outbound journey.

Arriving in Dubai after a 7 hour flight with Emirates, we then had a short private transfer to the Amwaj Rotana hotel, located on the start of The Walk in Jumeriah resort.

There were plenty of bars, shops and restaurants in the immediate vicinity of the hotel and just a 5-minute walk to the beach.

The views over the city from our room were amazing.

Alison & Blue in Dubai

On our second day in Dubai we took a 20-minute taxi ride to the Adventure Waterpark located at the Atlantis The Palm hotel, which is the world’s largest waterpark. There are endless activities

to keep you busy from Shark Lagoon/Dolphin Experiences, over 105 slides, Aquarium Tours, and a lovely sandy beach to relax on if it all gets too hectic. We had a great day here as a family.

BALI

From Dubai we flew direct to Denpasar Airport on the beautiful Island of Bali.

The first 3 days were spent at the Sol by Melia Benoa Hotel directly on the beach in Nusa Dua. This hotel has a calm relaxing feel with lush gardens.

Here there is plenty to do including hiring bikes, water sports, jet skis and paragliding. In the evenings there is light entertainment with local Balinese Dancers and singers.

Ubud, Bali

Ubud is a great area to visit. There is a lot to see and do with a great local market, plenty of chilled bars and reasonably priced restaurants.

Although, be aware of the mopeds on the roads that always have the right of way!

Our home for the next 4 days was in a 2 bedroomed villa with pool at the Ubud Wana Resort & Spa, right next to the Monkey Forest . These Monkeys are very cheeky indeed. Be careful not to leave your bag unattended as they will take whatever they like. They particularly like to steal everyone’s sunglasses and hats!

Bali Zoo

This was an amazing opportunity to have our breakfast early in the morning with the Orangutans. We were picked up from our hotel at 7am and transferred to the zoo which took about an hour. The breakfast provided an extensive range of foods from an egg station-any egg you could wish for, to sweet treats, to chicken and Noodles!

They had two Orangutans, one of which had recently had a baby so to get so close to them was a brilliant experience.

Other animals around us were parrots, an anteater, porcupines, and rabbits!

Next was Elephant Mud Fun. This was an amazing interactive 2 hour experience with the Elephants. We learnt all about the Asia Elephants, getting to put mud on them to keep them cool, having lots of photos taken with them and brushing all the mud off. They are particularly proud to have a new baby that was 18 months old. He joined us in the mud fun. It was a day that I will treasure the most and remember for the rest of my life.

The following day we enjoyed a full day tour. First we took in the breath taking views at Wanagiri Hidden Hills for some Instagram pictures and then onto Banyumala Twin Waterfalls.

We stopped for lunch at Beratan Lake, again enjoying fabulous views.

The whole trip took about 8 hours and we had our own private, local driver for the duration.

I didn’t really want to leave Ubud as it was amazing. I could have spent longer here.

LEGIAN/SEMINYAK, BALI

After leaving Ubud, we travelled to our final destination on the edge of the resort of Legian/Seminyak. We stayed for the remaining 7 nights at the stunning hotel Astagina Hotel Resort & Spa in a spacious 2 bedroomed suite on bed and breakfast.

Double Six Beach was just an 8 minute walk from our hotel and had plenty of shops, bars and restaurants to choose from. This area is quite lively if you want that. As a family we preferred to go down to the beach to watch the amazing sunset and relax on the many coloured bean bags and just watch the world go by.

Whilst in Legion, we enjoyed a day trip to Uluwata. This was about an hour’s drive from Legian.

We visited Pandawa Beach for an hour then went onto Uluwatu Temple, which has stunning dramatic cliff views and was home to more mischievous Monkeys!

Pendang Beach was our next stop. This beach has a lively atmosphere with lots of surfers and again some naughty Monkeys. In the evening, we went for a lovely meal on Jimbaran Beach. We enjoyed great Seafood, good service and another beautiful sunset. They also treated us to a firework display to celebrate our final evening.

All in all, it was an unbelievable family holiday. I would highly recommend anybody to visit Bali and would be more than happy to discuss it with you further if you are thinking of going yourself.

LISA’S AMAZING VIETNAM EXPERIENCE

Lisa recently enjoyed an amazing holiday to Vietnam. She was there to visit her son, who currently lives there, but before doing that her and her husband, John, and daughter, Charlotte, spent a fantastic 10 days travelling around Vietnam, discovering all that the country has to offer and seeing the sights. Here is her story and some of the highlights of the trip.

HANOI, VIETNAM

‘We flew overnight from Manchester, via Doha, an amazing airport with a park in the middle of it!

On arrival in Hanoi, our private guide met us and took us to our hotel, Hotel de L’Opera .

Our room was ready for us on arrival, even though it was early morning, so we had a couple of hours sleep and then went out to explore Hanoi.

Although I have visited before, I needed to remind myself how to cross the road in Vietnam. Basically, the cars and scooters don’t stop for you, even on crossings, you just have to walk across and they go round you! A bit scary at first but it is surprising how quickly you get used to it. Just don’t try it when you get back to England!

We enjoyed a walk around the lake in the centre of Hanoi, our first Hanoi Beer along with the Fresh Vietnamese Spring Rolls for lunch.

The afternoon was spent travelling around the city on the Hop on Hop

off bus. A great way to see a new city, though we just stayed on it all the way round. This was a new attraction since I last visited a few years ago and I can already see how tourism has developed here in the last few years.

The next day, our private guide took us to several attractions in the city including Ho Chi Minh’s Mausoleum, The Temple of Literature and The Museum of Ethnology.

In the evening, he came back to the hotel to escort us around the city to sample the street foods on offer. As it was a Friday evening the city was very lively and we also experienced some of the weekend night life.

NINH BINH, VIETNAM

Early next morning, we set off on our 2 hour journey to Ninh Binh. This is often known as an inland Halong B ay with it’s amazing scenery of sheer limestone mountains rising up beside the river.

We had a couple of days here, enjoying the scenery, the River boat (Sampan) rides, cycling around the countryside and just relaxing a little after the hustle and bustle of Hanoi.

HALONG BAY, VIETNAM

From Ninh Binh, we then had a 3 hour journey across to Halong Bay. Here we boarded our beautiful boat ‘Orchid Trendy’ and settled into our luxurious cabin with large bathroom, with a full sized bath in the window.

We enjoyed a lovely buffet lunch whilst we set sail into the amazing bay (Lan Ha Bay, next to Halong Bay) and enjoyed the fantastic scenery of limestone rock formations coming out of the water. There were only about 30 guests on board so it felt very exclusive. Some of the guests enjoyed an excursion into a cave that afternoon but we just stayed up on deck enjoying the sunshine and the gorgeous scenery.

After Happy Hour at the bar up on deck along with a cookery lesson – how to make Vietnamese Spring Rolls, we went down for a lovely 3-course dinner. After dinner there was the option to go squid fishing or sit back on deck for a nightcap before an early night as we had an early start the next morning.

We decided against the 5.30am start for the Tai Chi session up on deck before breakfast. However, we were still up for a 6.45am breakfast so that we could go kayaking after breakfast, before we set sail again.

After kayaking there was more food – an early brunch before disembarking and being transported back to the port. Here our guide was waiting for us to transport us back to Hanoi Airport for our next flight.

HOI AN, VIETNAM

It was just a short 1 hour flight down to Da Nang, where we were met by another guide and transported to our lovely beachside hotel in Hoi An, The Boutique Hoi An Resort .

It was lovely to have a couple of days chilling by the pool in the beautiful sunshine in Hoi An.

However, we also did a half day Vespa Tour whilst there, which was brilliant. Riding pillion on our own Vespa with driver, we rode around the countryside, visiting some amazing attractions such as a Coffee producer, a boat builder and local villages. At the end of the excursion we enjoyed a traditional Vietnamese lunch in a riverside restaurant.

We also caught a taxi to a local spot where we enjoyed ‘Coconut Boat’ rides, which was an experience.

In the evening, we caught the hotel shuttle bus into Hoi An where there were lots of shops, market stalls, bars and restaurants. When it got dark the river was lit up with traditional Chinese lanterns and boats and there was a very busy vibe to the town. It was an amazing experience.

HAI PHONG CITY, VIETNAM

The last part of our trip involved a flight back up to Haiphong, where our son is currently living. Although we stayed in a hotel, we lived a bit more like a local here. Haighong isn’t a tourist city and westerners were quite a rare sight.

On the Sunday we caught the bus from the city centre to the coast. When got on a ferry across to Cat Ba Island , which is a lovely tourist destination. Here we hired scooters for about £2.50 for the day and toured around the island. We visited a national park and hiked up to a beautiful view point with amazing views across the bay.

All in all, we had an amazing trip and I would highly recommend Vietnam to anybody who is considering it. It is a very safe destination and everybody is so friendly. It is a very cheap destination once you are there.

We caught up with Inghams’ own Julie Franklin, Head of Agency Sales who recently returned from a wonderful week in Austria, wisely having done a twin-centre holiday visiting both Saalbach and Zell am See. In our blog, Julie shares the highlights of her trip with us, which we think will give you lots of inspiration for a fantastic mountainous holiday destination!

Travelling as a group of girlfriends who all enjoy the outdoors but have different ideas for a holiday, this Austrian summer adventure managed to tick the boxes for all involved, and it’s not difficult to understand why. From enchanting emerald lakes hidden between marvellous mountains to charmingly picturesque towns and cities, Austria is the ideal destination for any outdoor enthusiast wanting to revitalise the mind and body while connecting with nature. What’s not to like?

Without further ado, let’s walk you through Julie’s amazing trip and everything the girls got up to in Austria. Be warned, there’s a strong likelihood that by the time you finish reading, you’ll want to book your own holiday here as soon as possible!

RESORT CARD

A real added-value feature of this holiday was the personalised ‘Joker’ resort card (free with the Inghams package), as it ended up saving the girls a fortune, giving them each access to the buses, the chairlifts and gondolas, as well as various attractions which were either completely free or had reduced entrances. Like Julie, we are rather partial to a bargain when we see one!

HOTEL SAALBACHER HOF, SAALBACH

Staying at the fabulous Hotel Saalbacher Hof in Saalbach, Julie and friends were perfectly placed in the charming centre of this traditional resort, complete with a relaxing outdoor pool located in the hotel’s stunning gardens which Julia described as a perfect way to spend the day when they weren’t out exploring all that Saalbach has to offer.

Not knowing the area themselves at all, the girls appreciated the ‘resort ramble’ from the local representative, which was essentially a guided tour of the resort, highlighting the history of the various landmarks in Saalbach and pointing out places of interest. As well as how to get around, chairlifts locations to get up into the mountains and more, proving a most helpful introduction to the local area and irrefutably saving the group lots of time figuring things out for themselves.

HINTERGLEMM

For a lovely way to start the holiday and ease into the local area, Julie recommends a leisurely and scenic 45-minute walk along the Saalach riverside to Hinterglemm, the next resort along. As well as taking in the scenery, you’ll stumble across a charming wood-carving workshop where you can wander around and buy interesting pieces along the way to Hinterglemm. Upon arriving in Hinterglemm itself, the group enjoyed what Julie describes as the most “fantastic iced coffee and handmade ice cream” in the family-run Miksch Café Schleckena. A quaint location all year round, Hinterglemm is known for being Austria’s biggest ski resort for the winter and has an array of options for hiking in the summer, as well as horseback riding and even mountain climbing, depending on how adventurous you are feeling.

TALSCHLUSSWEG

You can also take the local bus to a place called Talschlussweg for free using the resort card, to then jump on the Noddy Train (otherwise known as End of the Valley Train – also free with the resort card) to the park area, which is perfect for adults and children alike, with high ropes, zip lines, tree top walks, and fabulous walks to mountain restaurants with stunning views.

SAALBACH

There are 2 chairlifts from the resort in Saalbach, and Julie opted to take the Schattberg X-press up the mountain purely for the views. Needless to say, they weren’t left disappointed. Julie adds; “A day pass on the chairlifts would usually cost €30, so the fact we could go up for free meant that simply going up for the view alone was more than justified.”

HOTEL TIROLERHOF, ZELL AM SEE

After a few glorious days in Saalbach, the group headed to Zell am See on a free, 30-minute transfer bus, taking further advantage of their resort card.

Staying at the picturesque Hotel Tirolerhof which Julie describes as “a fabulous spa”, the girls were delighted to be so close, to not only the centre of Zell, but also to the stunning lake, providing breath-taking views from the indoor pool and spa areas. Julie points out that “clothing is not an option in the spas, so you will need to have an open mind”. But with such incredible views, various steam rooms and saunas, the girls could think of nowhere they would rather be to chill out and relax.

Using the resort card once more, Julie and the girls booked one of the guided walks that took them up in a gondola to start with, a chairlift and then walked along a track on what Julie says “felt like we were at the top of the world!” And one of the best things about this guided walking tour is that the girls all had different abilities. So whilst some walked ahead a little faster and others took a slower pace, it didn’t disrupt the walk or take away from the experience at all – each of them loved it. To end the walk on a high, the girls were rewarded with delicious food and a Radler at Franzl restaurant with unbeatable views.

No visit to an Austrian lake resort is complete without taking a dip in the lake itself! This hotel also gives free access to the lido, so the girls enjoyed a swim and a bit of time to chill. We can’t imagine there being anything like a swim in a lake surrounded by mountains.

My Time in Venice by Emma

Venice Short Break

Venice really is one of the most beautiful places I have ever seen. There really is something extremely charming and romantic about the city.

Getting to Venice

Our hotel was in a great position around 5 minutes from the Rialto bridge. Our room was very authentic, the perfect start to our holiday!

What to Do in Venice

We were eager to get out and explore this amazing city as soon as we arrived.

The stunning alleyways and canals are just something else. We decided to experience a Gondola Ride straight away and this did not disappoint. It is definitely a must do! We paid €60 total for this and worth every penny, as we sailed along the Grand Canal taking in the breath-taking picturesque views.

We walked for miles and miles exploring the Grand Canal, Rialto Bridge, Dodges Palace. There is so much history on this island and over 200 stunning churches.

There are islands off Venice which are easily accessible from the water buses or private water taxis so we took a trip over to Murano where we watched them make the vases and glass ornaments. Really interesting to see how these are made. A stunning little place!

What to Eat in Venice

The Venetian food is out of this world. We tried out all the local delights from fresh pastries and biscuits, Gelato, Pizza, Seafood, pasta and so much more. It is definitely worth getting away from the main tourist areas and going off the beaten track slightly for this – What to Eat and drink in Venice

Day Trip to Verona

One day we decided to do a day trip to Verona. We took a train from Venice to Verona which was a 1.5 hour train ride and €18 return trip. There we visited Juliet’s Balcony which was just magical. It really was everything I wanted it to be!

We wandered the streets of Verona, exploring the small alleyways. It is also a great city for shopping and we visited a local market. A pretty city and definitely worth a visit.

That’s what we know Tenerife for best, so we’re here to tell you more about undiscovered Tenerife. Its beautiful scenery, friendly culture, high levels of sustainability and its exciting gastronomy scene has a lot to boast about and shouldn’t go unmissed. So, if you fancy doing something a little different on your next holiday, Tenerife could be your answer…

EXPLORE AND ADVENTURE

When it comes to exploring, you’re spoilt for choice on a Tenerife holiday. Get off-the-beaten-track and you’re in for a real treat, as there’s a whole array of hikes and treks on offer. There’s so many to choose from, but we’ve selected a couple of our favourite routes that will offer mighty views!

There are lots of easy walking trails in Tenerife that’ll show you forests, ravines, volcanic landscapes and the beautiful coastline. One of our favourites is the Santiago del Teide to Masca hike in the Teno Mountains, which is perfect for those looking to spend a morning or afternoon appreciating the lush and rugged landscapes of the island. Classed as ‘easy’, this point-to-point trail showcases the magnificent Teno Mountains – a walking route that some revisit again and again. Highlights include the unbeatable views through the mountains to the small town of Masca and Mirador de Cruz de Hilda lookout point and its panoramic views of the surrounding area plus gorgeous palm trees and shrubbery. There’s a café here too, so you can take some time to sit back and enjoy the impressive views.

Or perhaps you’re an avid hiker and looking for a real challenge?

If so, then Route 040 could be the trek for you. This is a landmark hike starting and ending on ground level at the sandy shores of Socorro beach, taking you through to the highest point in Spain – peaking at 3,718 meters high! At the top, you’ll be amazed as you look down onto the clouds. Whilst this isn’t a trek for the faint hearted, the beauty of the trail will reward you for those hard-earned steps (and of course, the fact that you completed it is a reward in itself)!

It’s the beauty of this challenging trail that attracts so many to give it a go each year – don’t miss the protected landscape of Los Campeches, Tigaiga and Ruiz in Los Realejos and the Natural Park of Corona Forestal as you go – the perfect places for a pit stop!

Oh, and when we say it’s not the faint hearted, we mean it! The whole trek covers a total of 27.7 kilometres, meaning that average completion time is around 12 hours. If you’re feeling super brave and fancy running the route, then it’ll take you around 4 to 6 hours.

SUSTAINABLE TENERIFE

This is a destination where sustainability comes high on the list of priorities. From a dedicated walking festival demonstrating the variety and richness of the landscapes and nature, and initiatives to release turtles back to the sea to ‘Respect the Mountains’ – conservation for natural spaces including path cleaning and removing debris from the surface of the sea.

Tenerife is also one of the few destinations in the world to certify the boats who offer whale watching carry the “Blue Boat” flag. This symbol certifies their professional authorisation to carry out the activity and ensures that the staff on board know all about these lovely mammals and can help visitors to understand their behaviour.

Lots of effort goes in to make sure that Tenerife is a destination that does its bit for the planet.

So much so, that Tenerife has recently been recognised as a Biosphere Sustainable Destination for its efforts and contribution to sustainability and has joined 32 other destinations in achieving a Biosphere Certification, as well as a Whale Heritage Destination for its sustainable whale watching operations and protection of the oceans and marine life. Well done, Tenerife!

TENERIFE’S FOOD SCENE

It goes without saying that we all enjoy eating out on holiday, right? Well, you’ll be in for a real treat in Tenerife, as it’s not short of a restaurant or two. Whether you head to the well-known hot spots or prefer to discover somewhere off the tourist trail, there’s a couple of things that you just have to try!

Papas Arrugadas (otherwise known as Wrinkled Potatoes) is popular with the locals. Boiled in lots of sea salt water for around 30 minutes, they’re then roasted so that the skin wrinkles and creates a crusting of salt. Although simple, spuds grown in Tenerife are packed full of flavour thanks to the rich volcanic soil. You’ll find these tasty morsels in many restaurants in Tenerife – so be sure to give them a try.

Fish is a staple on most small islands, and Tenerife is no exception. Fishermen deliver all-manner of fresh fish to restaurants on a daily basis, including sardine, pollock, grouper and many more so you’ll have the latest catch that evening. If you’re looking for something super authentic, give Atún en adobo (marinated tuna) a try – it’s marinated with herbs and spices overnight before frying – and is delicious!

You’ll not struggle to find wonderful fish in Tenerife’s restaurants, from seafront spots with a relaxing atmosphere to those centred in the hustle and bustle of it all, you’ll not be disappointed.

And not forgetting the wines! Some may say that Tenerife’s best kept secret is its wine. There are a few wonderful wineries to choose from, including Bodegas Monje and Bodega Reveron, where you can try some of the island’s gorgeous dry and acidic whites and smooth reds.

North America Vs South America: Which one’s for you?

Two huge continents with an eclectic mix of picturesque scenery, clashing cultures and renowned cuisines – how could you ever choose between the two?

Well, we’re not asking you to. But, we’re going to home in on two of our favourite destinations – one from each continent, and which both offer an incredible holiday experience. What’s more, they couldn’t be more different if they tried!

LAS VEGAS

First up, Las Vegas. Everyone knows it for its mishmash of adult entertainment, fine restaurants and the iconic strip – full of the world’s best casinos! Once you arrive, you’ll soon learn there’s not enough hours in the day to soak up everything this unique destination has to offer.

But how can we persuade you to go ahead and book a trip to the destination that never sleeps? Well, take a look at our favourite things to do in Sin City and we reckon it’ll get you excited!

Place a bet in a world-class casino

You’re spoilt for choice when it comes to casinos in Las Vegas. Caesars Palace is a particular favourite and must-visit though – with a mix of past and present, this old-school casino is the epitome of the destination…and nothing like the casinos you’ll find at home. The atmosphere, the choice and the sheer amount of people (any time of the day) is what makes any Las Vegas casino stand out from the crowd.

Don’t stick to one casino though – make sure you try a few (even if you’re just putting on a small bet) and experience as much as you can. It’s a once-in-a-life-time experience after all!

If you’re not a regular casino goer, don’t fret – why not take a stroll to the Gamblers General Store in Downtown Vegas? There are plenty of ‘how to’ gaming books to get your knowledge up to scratch. Or of course, doing your research at home before you travel, will do just the trick too.

Watch a resident musician or band

The Strip is well known for its resident A-list musicians and bands – and it’ll be guaranteed that whenever you visit, somebody will be putting on a show. It could even be worth checking the calendar before you book to prevent disappointment – and you could soon be in the crowd waiting to see the likes of Celine Dion, Elton John, Cher, Lady Gaga, Backstreet Boys or J. Lo perform!

Indulge in the finest restaurants and bars

Ever heard of kobe beef? You may have, but it’s unlikely you’ll have tasted it, as only a select number of restaurants in the U.S sell it – and three of them are in Vegas. Seeing as it’s so exclusive, we reckon you should give it a try. Head to SWS Steakhouse at the Wynn, Jean Georges Steakhouse at Aria or Jose Andres’ Bazaar at SLS. Trust us when we say, it’ll be one of the best steaks you’ve ever tried.

We’re sure you already know, that a tipple or two won’t be hard to find in Vegas – but if you’re looking for something a little extra special, give The Rio Wine Cellar and Tasting Room a try. It’s home to an impressive $10 million worth of wine! But don’t worry, there are plenty of different vinos to try, for all budgets and tastes.

Take a trip to the Grand Canyon

If you’re unlikely to make the trip twice, then we highly recommend you take a day trip to the mighty Grand Canyon. Consisting of 277 miles of the Colorado River and an impressive landscape, it’s no wonder it hosts a mighty five million visitors each year.

Luckily, it’s not difficult to get to from Las Vegas – and there are plenty of options too; from buses and helicopter rides, to motorcycles and small planes, or you could even rent a car for yourself. Of course, the prices will vary depending on which type of transport you choose.

24 Hours in Paris

Fancy a break but don’t have a lot of time to spare? I recently spent a day in Paris and managed to see all the sights in one day.

Getting There

You can easily fly from Manchester either the evening before and spend the night in a hotel or catch an early morning flight to Charles De Gaulle and then train into the city centre. Alternatively, get the train to London and hop on the Eurostar which takes you straight into the city centre.

What to do when you are there

Once we arrived in the centre of Paris, we had a ticket for the Hop on Hop off bus which went around the whole city stopping off at the main sights.

Our first stop was The Arc De Triomphe and The Tomb of The Unknown Soldier. You can pay to get the top of the Arc De Triomphe and see the views all the way down the Champs Elysees.

We jumped back on the bus and listened to the compare through our free headphones telling us all about the buildings and the history of Paris, before getting off at our next stop which was Place de la Concorde. This is one of the best places for a view of the Eiffel Tower and lots of group photos and selfies were taken here. You also have the wonderful fountains between here and the Eiffel Tower.

From here it is just a few minutes’ walk down to the Eiffel Tower, via a few souvenir stalls if you wish to pick up a few reminders of your trip. If you wish to go up the Eiffel Tower then you have the choice of lift or stairs, depending on how fit you are feeling. It is a few euros less to climb the stairs – phew!! As we only had one day, we decided not to go up to the top and just took a few more photos from the ground before getting back on the bus at the Eiffel Tower stop and heading off to our next port of call – The Louvre.

The Louvre

After watching The Da Vinci Code, we had to get a photo of the glass pyramid outside the Louvre. Not really arty people, we decided not to go in, though it would have been nice to have seen the Mona Lisa! After our early start we were ready for a bite to eat. We found a nearby pavement café and grabbed a café and baguette whilst watching the sights of Paris go by. Not too expensive to say we were in the centre of Paris.

After lunch we changed on to the ‘blue route’ and headed up to the Sacre Coeur in Montmartre. It was a very warm day and was hot work walking up all those steps to the Sacre Coeur but was well worth it when we got there for the views over Paris. The people selling bottles of water for a euro were making a fortune that day!

After taking in the view, we wandered around to the Place Du Tertre to see the artists at work and soak up the atmosphere. It is a great place to have your portrait done here.

After grabbing an ice-cream, time to head back to the bus and our next stop The Notre Dame. Unfortunately, you can’t go in at the minute, and from the back all you can see is scaffolding because of the fire, but from the front it is still an impressive building.

Now, getting towards the end of the day, just time to pop in a couple of shops then head back to where we were getting our transport home. We managed to find the nearest bar and enjoy a nice cold beer to cool down before we were picked up to head off home!

All in all, a great day and highly recommended!

Ancient ruins you need to see

The greenest of the Greek islands

What we love about Corfu, is it’s the greenest of the Greek islands (and there are thousands of them)! Not to be confused with Ireland, Corfu’s often called ‘The Emerald Island’ due to its mesmerising vineyards, beautiful mountain peaks and simply for having some of the prettiest shades of green, turning the island into an emerald heaven.

Rural villages

You’ll not be short of a rural village or two in Corfu – and they’re all gorgeous and beautifully authentic. We don’t expect you’ll visit them all, and if you only get time to visit one – make it Paleokastritsa. You’ll find everything you need here; from charming tavernas, a stunning blue bay and six beaches to sit back and soak it all up on. Where to see the Northern Lights

The Northern Lights are a sight like no other. The ethereal dance across the dark sky amazes those who spot them . We think they’re the world’s finest natural phenomenon. With that in mind, we thought we’d share our favourite places to witness them in 2019.

TROMSO, NORWAY

Tromso is at the centre of the northern aurora zone, meaning the odds on spotting them are definitely in your favour. We love Tromso because, while the main draw is undoubtedly to see the Northern Lights, there’s plenty to enjoy on the ground. Opt for adventurous excursions, including husky sledding, snowmobiling, hiking, kayaking and whale safaris.

Or head to Fjellheisen, the cable car behind the city’s Arctic cathedral. Once at the top, a number of delightful walks afford superb views of the city below.

We’ve not even mentioned the lively nightlife. From traditional Norwegian cuisine to more typical home comforts, everybody is catered for here. While for those who want to stay up after hours, Tromso boasts more pubs per capita than any other city in Norway. Skål!

With a population of just 2,600 and three hours from Oslo by plane, Svalbard is remote, and it’s this that makes it the ultimate winter experience. In winter, the sun barely appears above the horizon, giving it an eerie, mystical feel. Its topography is both dramatic and beautiful. Think snow-laden peaks, towering glaciers and ice fields as far as the eye can see.

The total lack of light pollution makes for a terrific Northern Lights experience. Wintry excursions are all on offer here too, though Svalbard has an ace up its sleeve: polar bears. There are more of them than people,. So pack your camera and hop on a photography excursion. The month of September is best for combining both polar bears and the Northern Lights.

Rendezvous in Rio!

We arrived in the evening, and as we passed the world-famous Ipanema and Copacabana beaches I firmly had Barry Manilow’s ‘Copacabana’ and ‘The Girl from Ipanema’ etched in my mind and would have for the entire trip!

We were given the most fabulous welcome by the Pestana Hotel – with Caipirinha’s cocktail and the most fabulous roof top views. From the distance we could see Christ The Redeemer appearing and then disappearing again amongst the clouds. It was most eerie.

The first two days I spent lots of time learning everything about this incredible continent, meeting representatives from all over South America.

On our final evening it was certainly dress to impress, to spend an evening at the luxurious Copacabana Palace. We danced the night away, and I couldn’t help but think how lucky I was to be there!

The team at Latin Routes really did, for me, save the best until last. Our final day arrived and first up was a visit up in the cable cars to Sugar Loaf Mountain – from here the views overlooking the city and it’s gorgeous beaches was a sight to behold.

Then came the big one…. Corcovado, home to Christ the Redeemer. I believe in life, you occasionally witness something truly majestic that leaves you overcome with emotion. For me, this was it! As you approach him you can not help but be wowed by his sheer height and how his commanding position looks over the entire city, protecting it. Then clouds would appear and just has he had done on that first night, he disappeared and then would re-appear. Almost like magic, a rainbow appeared and this memory will last forever.

Faye’s holiday to Parga – Mainland Greece

My absolute favourite place in the World is Parga – but when I tell people this the first thing they say is, where is that?!

Flying into the tiny airport of Preveza, the stunning Parga is around a one hour drive away. Situated on mainland Greece – once you arrive in resort, you very much feel like you are on one of the Islands.

This time we stayed at the small, family run Alfa Hotel. The staff here are so friendly and welcoming, nothing is too much trouble. It takes about 10 minutes to walk to the sea front from here, although it can take longer, when stopping to chat to workers who remember us from last time!

The waterfront in Parga is without doubt, the most stunning I have seen. An array of different coloured shop fronts – selling everything from “I love Parga” souvenirs to delicious Greek cuisine. The old town is worth exploring, too. The higgledy piggledy cobbled streets will take you to hidden little hotels and even an Olive Oil factory. As you begin the incline towards the Citadel, it would be rude not to stop off for a refreshing drink in one of the cool bars, offering the most romantic and pretty views.

When you reach the Citadel, the views are simply spectacular. It is there that you can truly appreciate the effort that has gone in to keeping the waterfront the jewel in Parga’s crown.

If you want to explore – there are the most incredible, if a little strenuous, walks to be done. If relaxation is for you, then the quirky little resort train will take you up to Ali Pasha’s castle – with a stop off in one of the nearby villages, en-route.

Due to it’s location – there are plenty of boat trips that you can take to the neighbouring Islands of Corfu or Paxos. If you want to see something majestic, I would highly recommend a coach trip to Meteora. The monasteries built on the top of these rock formations is a sight to be seen and something you will never forget!

If you like you night life low key, Parga is for you. There are so many delicious restaurants to choose from – you will simply have to return just so you can sample them all. Ending the night with a night-cap, some slow-beat music and a view out to sea is my idea of heaven – and here I get to experience my ‘heaven’ every night.

Will I be visiting again soon? ….. I don’t need to answer that!

Bergamo, Italy – Perfect Family Short Break

We were staying in Citta Alta which is elevated over the new town of Bergamo so offering amazing views over the City.

Bergamo is a delightful town offering cobbled streets with endless little shops and restaurants where you can purchase cakes, home-made Pizza’s and plenty of other delicious local cuisine. The town’s main square Piazza Vecchia is where the Palazzo della Ragione dominates. My Husband and eldest daughter Lauren went up the narrow staircase and all of the 231 steps to the top of the Bell Tower, Torre Civica, which is 52 metres high. This experience cost just 5.00 euros each and is well worth the climb as the views are spectacular.

The next day again we took the 48 minute direct train from Bergamo to the city of Milan, a short ride on the metro to the Piazzo del Duomo and as we came up the steps the Cathedral was breath taking. The bustling square and amazing shopping area of Milan was a complete contrast to Bergamo.

I would highly recommend this area of Italy to visit and it has definitely given me the incentive to see other areas of Italy…….watch this space….

Lisa’s Amazing Trip to Norway

Norway, home to the Midnight Sun in summer and the Northern Lights in Winter, is an absolutely stunning destination at any time of year.

Being married to a Norwegian, I have visited the country many times and was lucky enough to go again this summer for my nieces wedding.

Our first few nights we were staying just outside the coastal city of Stavanger. The city itself is a lovely port town with a 12th Century Cathedral, which we enjoyed a guided tour of. There is a lovely historic part of town with quaint traditional buildings.

When we were there, there were two enormous cruise ships in port, dwarfing all the traditional houses, as this is one of the first stopping off points for the cruise ships sailing up the coast of Norway. Cruising is an excellent way of seeing Norway as you get to enjoy the magnificent scenery of the fjords as you sail up and down the coast.
Being a University city, Stavanger has a lively atmosphere and a varied assortment of shopping and dining opportunities.

Within the Stavanger region there are many scenic attractions, one of the main one being the world famous Preikestolen or Pulpit Rock, located 604m above sea level. We walked to this famous landmark, which took a couple of hours each way from the car park. However, for the less active, you can take a scenic ferry ride up the Lysefjord and view it from below.

After a few days in Stavanger, we flew up above the Arctic Circle to the city of Tromso. In the winter months Tromso is a great viewing point for the colourful Northern Lights which sometimes light up the night sky. Obviously, we didn’t get to experience that wonderful natural phenomenon as we were there in summer.

Although we were just slightly too late in the year for the midnight sun, it still didn’t really go dark and was a strange experience still sitting up at 11pm in the evening, still in broad daylight.

The scenery in the North of Norway is absolutely stunning, with snow-capped mountains all year round. It is extremely popular these days with many tourists driving the Northern Lights Route in campervans and caravans!

We enjoyed a walk up to mountain glacier one day, which was quite exciting. You can walk on the glaciers but you must go on an organised walk where you are roped together for security.

Another fantastic experience was walking up a mountain through quite thick mountain fog but then rising above the fog to experience fantastic views of the mountain tops, blue sky behind them and the whole valley below just thick sea of cloud.

Whilst in Tromso, there was one of the Hurtigruten ships in port, which sail up and down the coast of Norway 365 days a year. They are working ships but you are able to book a coastal cruise for all or part of the journey. This is an excellent way of seeing Norway as the ships stop at many ports en-route for you to get off and explore this fascinating country. In the winter, it is a great way to see the Northern Lights as there is little or no light pollution from the ship. As we sell Hurtigruten I asked if it was possible to have a tour of the ship and they were happy to oblige. On board it reminded me of the traditional cruise ships of the past with wood panelling, relaxing lounges and piano bars and, of course, excellent food. It is a far cry from the large cruise ships with on board night clubs, west end style shows etc!

Norwegian food is wonderful, with lots of fresh fish and seafood. We managed to catch our tea one day, whilst out on a fishing trip. We also sampled Reindeer, cooked in a lovely sauce. They also enjoy lots of fresh baked cakes and puddings so it is a good job we did so much walking!

Nicola – Mini cruise to Bruges

We were greeted by the friendly staff at Hull as we boarded the Pride of Bruges, P&O ferry on the overnight sailing to Zeebrugge. The check in process was very quick, we were given our cabins keys, whilst the children were given balloons by a Pirate entertainer.

We stayed in an inside cabin with pull down bunk beds, there is an option to upgrade to outside cabin which gives you a little more space and sea view.

After a comfortable night’s sleep, we disembarked in Zeebrugge where a coach was waiting to take us into Bruges for the day. The journey only takes about 30 minutes.

We headed down the cobbled streets lined with little chocolate shops, bars and cafes to the Choco Story, Chocolate Museum – a must for Chocolate Lovers.

The Friet Museum is the first and only museum dedicated to potato fries, I was surprised to find out that they actually originate from Belgium! The children really enjoyed it, there are lots of fun quizzes for them to take part in and we also got to sample the famous French fries in the cafe!

We stopped for a drink, of course to sample the famous Belgian beer, and ice-cream at a lovely cafe on Markt Square (Market Square).

The Square is surrounded by the most striking buildings which includes what is perhaps the most beautiful building in Bruges, the Gothic Town Hall or Stadhuis, dating from 1376, also the Belfry of Bruges a medieval bell tower in the centre. I was not daring enough to climb the 366 steps to the top, but I can imagine the views from the top would be amazing. There are lots of horse drawn carts in the square ready to take you on a tour around the city, they cost around 50 Euros for a 30 minute tour. Bruges has so many art galleries and museums we did not have enough time in the one day to see them all!

At the end of a busy sightseeing day , we made our way back the coach to be taken back to Zeebrugge port to board the ferry for the overnight sailing back to Hull.

There is still so much more to see in Bruges that we couldn’t fit into one day, we would definitely like to return maybe at Christmas time to enjoy the famous Christmas Markets Bruges has to offer!

Dubai Fam Trip

7-11 May 2017

Day 1
We departed from Manchester at 10.00 am onboard flight EK22 my first flight onboard the fabulous Emirates A380 for a 7 hour flight in Economy class to Dubai.
Upon arrival we were transferred to the Brand New Hotel, ‘The Address Boulevard Dubai Hotel’ for our 2 night stay, in Downtown Dubai and opposite the tallest building the ‘Burj Khalifa’.

Day 3
We checked out of the ‘The Address Boulevard Hotel Dubai’ and an hour’s drive out of Dubai to Ras Al Khaimah to the beautiful hotel ‘Waldorf Astoria Hotel’, this beautiful hotel is located on a lovely sandy beach.
This resort is mainly attracted to families and in the resort there is the ‘Iceland Waterpark’ and two shopping Malls.
After a hosted lunch we then transferred to the brand new hotel ‘Fairmount Fujairah Beach Resort’ in Fujairah for our one night stay.

Day5
After enjoying a hosted breakfast we check out of the ‘The Oberoi Beach Resort, Al Zorah and make our way to Dubai Airport for our 7.5hour flight back to Manchester with Emirates on the EK19.

Shine bright like a diamond – My week in Barbados !!!

Flying from Manchester, we treated ourselves to the Escape VIP lounge which is definitely great value and a really relaxing way to start your holiday.

Very impressed with the Thomas Cook service – the newly renovated aircraft feature more legroom then the short haul service and all seats feature seat back TV’s. There is an option to upgrade to Premium economy if you prefer or you can upgrade your in flight entertainment package to offer you more movie choices.

On arrival we were greeted by Edward, our driver – a friendly young man who took us to our hotel in no time in order for us to hit St Lawrence gap. We quickly found a great little bar, My Friends Place – we arrived just at the right time because it was happy hour. Great atmosphere and welcoming staff.

If you want to experience true Bajan hospitality I would recommend a meal at Daddy’s – delicious food cooked off the grill – yummy! This is where my husband discovered the Islands hot pepper sauce that he had with everything from then on!
If you want a delicious lunch at a great price then Happy Days cafe is the place to go. Smashing service with perfect quick lunch bites.

Sandals Barbados, well what can I say? From the moment we walked into the lounge area we knew we would not want to leave. Beautiful, manicured gardens, lovingly looked after by Markson – a endearing gentleman of great character with lots of funny anecdotes. The rooms are stunning with lots of dark wood – and the Crystal Lagoon swim-up one bedroom butler suite with patio soaking tub for two is just the ultimate in luxury. The little touches such as the tub for two in the bathroom and on the patio are perfect for honeymooners and lovers in love!

Every food taste is catered for – and when we just wanted to chill by the pool we could grab a hot dog from the cute little ‘doggies’ stand or a Pizza from Dinos. Sandals is great for real ‘foodies’ – 11 unique dining experiences in total.

We have made some very happy memories from our time spent in Barbados…try for yourself and make memories that will last a life time!

LGBT Holidays in the Caribbean

The Caribbean is THE place to go for couples in love. There is such a wide array of activities to experience as well as gorgeous beaches, amazing hotels, friendly people, not to mention the food and music.

Islands vary considerably and although there has been an amount of homophobia on some islands in the past, gay couples can now generally visit most Caribbean Islands without any worries.

The most gay- friendly islands are said to be the Dutch and French Islands such as Aruba, Curacao, Saba and Bonaire. Dutch St Maarten and French St Martin have long had a gay-friendly reputation and there are many beaches and bars where gay and straight couples coexist peacefully.

The exclusive French Island of St Barts has been called one of the most gay-friendly islands in the Caribbean with its gorgeous beaches and high end dining.

The island of Curacao has been very public in its embrace of gay travellers with its many gay friendly hotels and attractions. It “encourages gay and lesbian travellers to visit its island and experience its “live and let live” atmosphere for themselves” say the Curacao Tourist Board. They have a dedicated website – www.gaycuracao.com which lists gay-friendly weekend hot spots.

The US Virgin Islands offer a friendly and tolerant attitude throughout the islands. St Croix, in particular, has become a mecca for gay travellers.

Cancun in Mexico has earned its reputation as an LGBT party hotspot particularly during the Cancun International Gay Festival held each May. Playa Del Carmen is also just a 45 minute drive away with its gay friendly beach clubs, bars and shopping malls. Mexico’s hottest gay resort, however, is Puerto Vallarta, a charming town with excellent facilities and beautiful beaches, known as the gay capital of Mexico!

California and Nevada

Nothing like having the beach all to ourselves in November and the sun was still shining! Manhattan Beach was one of the destinations in a week long educational trip to California and Nevada. Looks something out of “Baywatch” (NOT!).

First stop for myself and my wife Caroline, was two nights at the Sheraton Universal, Los Angeles which was pretty much on the door step of Universal Studios. Perfect for being almost first in line as the park opened. Back to my childhood of running around trying to do all of the rides and packing in as much fun as possible. Lots of ticket options available including general admission, front of line passes and VIP passes which is the ultimate experience.

Next stop was four nights in Las Vegas at the Palazzo. Wow, what a great time we had. The Palazzo is a 5 star hotel which is very reminiscent of Italy and together with its sister hotel, Venetian (that actually has a gondola water ride running through the first floor of its hotel). Totally awe inspiring. Lots of things to do in Las Vegas other than the gambling like, shows, helicopter rides out to Grand Canyon, taking in all of the activities in all of the 30 hotels approximately on the famous Las Vegas Strip. We even found time to see Elvis (a really good impersonator, that is!). I could go on forever about this destination but if you want to hear more, give us a call and we can give you a much information as you want to know.

Our last pit stop was back to Los Angeles before our flight back to the UK. We stayed at Holiday Inn, Los Angeles airport. This hotel is close to the airport and has a free shuttle bus to and from the airport. Although a 4 star property it does appear to feel a little tired and in need of an uplift, but the great thing about this Hotel is the ability to pay $5 and step outside and across the road to a small shuttle bus that not only takes you to two malls, it even goes to Manhattan Beach. Unbelieveably inexpensive as the hop on, hop off minibus takes you on a timetabled service from morning into the evening. It’s a perfect stopover hotel with an added extra.

Alison mini Weekend Break to Budapest, Hungary

We checked in for a 0815am,2 hour 40 minute flight, departing from Terminal 1 at Manchester with Jet2 flights. We took advantage of the Ultra modern airport lounge the ‘Escape lounge’ which offers unlimed tea and coffee, pastries, sausage and bacon butties, fruits , yogurts and alcoholic drinks.

We landed into Budapest airport and cleared customs in a few minutes and we were met by our private transfer to our hotel, the Ibis Budapest Centrum hotel , which is 3 star plus comfortable hotel located on a lovely street with lots of bars and restaurants to choose from and only a short walk to the nearest metro or within a 10 minute walk to the nearest hop on hop off big bus stop that we bought into, its excellent value for money just £16.00 for a two days pass and includes a free river cruise and a free cocktail in the Cuban bar in the Jewish Quarter called La Bodeguita del Medio.

Budapest still has its own currency the Hungarian Forint approximately 379,000 forints to the pound, on average prices are very cheap a local beer costing just £1.50 and a cocktail for just £3.50 and a two course meal with wine just £20.00 a person. We dined at the ‘Zeller Bistro’ and a highly recommended Hungarian restaurant to appreciate the Hungarian cuisine called, ‘ Hungarikum Biztro’.

The city has amazing architecture and the main tourist spots on the Pest side, is the suspended ‘Chain Bridge’ which spans the ‘River Danube’ between Buda and Pest, the Saint Stephens Basilica a Roman Catholic Church which is definitely worth having a look inside.

Buda Castle is the historical castle and palace complex of the Hungarian kings in Budapest, and was first completed in 1265.

Behind ‘Hero’s Square’ there is a lovely artificial boating lake lined with restaurants and bars overlooking the lake to take in the view of the beautiful building of ‘Vajdahunyad Castle’ .

Taking advantage of the hop on hop off bus we took the yellow line to Buda and after a short uphill walk we came to ‘Fisherman’s Bastion’ which is a terrace in neo-Gothic and neo-Romanesque style, situated on the Buda bank of the Danube, on the Castle hill in Budapest, around Matthias Church. The spectacular views from the terrace are truly amazing and as we sipped our cocktails we were serenaded by three Hungarian musicians.

Our last lunch was taken in the beautiful area of ‘Lizszt Ferenc Square’ on the Pest side of the river lots of restaurants line the beautiful square This is a cute square that is between the old town and the hero’s square on Andrassy Avenue.

We left Budapest on the Sunday evening for our inbound flight back to the UK, there is still so much to discover in this beautiful city and I can’t wait to book my return trip.

My Experiences of Vietnam & Cambodia

I met with ten other travel agents at 8am at Gatwick Airport. After a long but enjoyable flight from Gatwick to Hanoi with Vietnam Airlines, we arrived at Hanoi airport and were greeted by Martin, the Travel Indochina rep.

Hanoi is a charming city with beautiful lakes, shaded streets and lovely people.

This is a sombre experience, more so, seeing how the Vietnamese were saddened by his death and the respect he still has by the people. His nickname amongst them is ‘Uncle Ho’.

Afterwards we went to see the “Hanoi Hilton” not the hotel but the Old French Prison, used to keep the Vietnamese in check, while the French ruled the country. The name Hanoi Hilton, came from the American Air Force officers, who were imprisoned there, during the American/Vietnam War.

That night we had our first experience of Vietnamese food, which was excellent. Martin, chose various Vietnamese dishes for us all to try. The food was all very fresh, healthy with lots of vegetables and fish. The most popular dish is Pho (pronounced ‘Fur’) which is a big dish of tasty soup with noodles, meat and your choice of chillies, herbs etc.

To end the night, we had a few drinks in a local bar, 3 floors up, overlooking a busy traffic junction.. to see the organised chaos from above, is a sight to behold. Crossing the roads in Vietnam an experience in itself. They are full of scooters who don’t believe in stopping and seem to drive on any side of the road in any direction!. You literally have to just cross in front of them and they go round you – really! If you don’t you will be stood there all day!

After a second day discovering the wonderful delights of Hanoi, we then set off to Halong Bay, the highlight of my trip!. We boarded our luxurious boat and, whilst enjoying a sumptuous lunch, set sail out amongst the thousands of limestone islands. We were extremely lucky with the weather and had clear blue sky and sunshine for the rest of the day, the scenery was fantastic! We stayed on board overnight and rose early the next morning to climb to the top of Titop Island to see the amazing views!

On the way to the airport, we stopped to visit a lovely rice farming couple and their family, who invited us all in for a drink of her homemade rice wine – tasted very potent!

On arriving at Danang Airport we transferred to Hoi An for our 2 night stay at The Hoi An Historical Hotel Hoi An was an important trading town in the 16th century for the Chinese, Japanese, Dutch and Indian, which was heavily influenced by these countries and you can tell in the feel of the place. Lots of Chinese pagodas, the beautiful Japanese bridge and the smell of incense in the air from the Chinese temples.

Hoi An is famed for having some of the best tailors in the world where you can get suits and dresses made for a fraction of the price!

Later we had a great meal at the Duck café, fantastic high end Asian fusion food, from our chef, who recently taught Gordon Ramsay a thing or to about Squid!

We ended the evening with a walk along the river, with all the different coloured lanterns floating on the river and hanging in the trees and on the bridge – a wonderful sight!

The following day we all learnt how to be fishermen ( the Vietnamese way). We went out on the little boats and learnt how to throw the nets and pull them back in ( not much in mine I am afraid!) and learnt how to navigate a basket boat through the narrow waterways of the jungle before enjoying a wonderful seafood meal on board.

Sadly, the next day, we left Vietnam and boarded our flight to Siem Reap, Camboadia for our 3 night stay.

The day that followed was my birthday and I was treated to a very early start, at 4.45 am, where we were picked up from our hotel, the lovely Shinta Mani, and travelled by tuc tuc to Angkor Wat. We entered by the little-used eastern gate and witnessed the iconic spires of Angkor Wat emerge from the surrounding darkness. What a way start my birthday!! We spent the rest of the day visiting other hotels and temples, including Ta Prohm Temple where the blockbuster ‘Lara Croft, Tombraider’ was filmed.

After diner, we went out and experienced the nightlife of Siem Reap on Pub Street, with it’s bright lights, loud music and ‘crocodile pizzas’. Not really what you think of when you imagine Siem Reap!

For our last day we took a boat ride out on to Tonle Sap Lake and cruised past the floating villages, schools and houses before heading back to the airport for our long journey back to London.

Malta Kirker Education

Malta Kirker Educational 26th-29th April 2013 Friday 26 ^th April 2013

Meet Kathryn from Kirker Holidays at Terminal 1 Manchester Airport at 0400hrs for an Easyjet flight to Malta.

Arrived in Malta and took a minibus transfer to the island of Gozo including a short 30 minute ferry crossing to the small island arrived at the 5 star Ta Cenc Hotel for a fabulous five course meal and then an inspection of the hotel rooms and facilities of the hotel. The hotel would appeal to customers who want a get away from it all and an interest in walking and offers a regular shuttle bus to the nearby beach.

After leaving Ta Cenc holiday we had short guided tour of the island of Gozo visiting Xlendi Bay, Dwejra, Fungas Rock and the Azure window which gave us plenty of photo opportunities.

After the island tour transferred back to Malta by ferry and taken to the hotel Radisson Blu Resort & Spa in Golden Sands in the north of the island.

Upon check in to our suite rooms with sea view a site inspection of the hotel .

In the evening we were transferred to the resort of St Juliens and a meal taken at Zest restaurant.

Nightlife in St Julian’s & Paceville, Malta
Come the evening, and it seems the whole of St Julian’s is at the waterfront, having a good time. The restaurants are busy and the whole area has a real buzz about it. You can choose from a wide variety of restaurants, from traditional to Chinese take-aways . As the night draws on, there is a general move towards Paceville, the club capital of Malta. Paceville puts the emphasis on fun, with pubs and cafés spilling onto the streets and the clubs playing their music hot and loud. It’s fast, fun and unlike a lot of Mediterranean club areas, very good-natured

Saturday 27 ^th April 2013

After breakfast we were transferred approximately 35 minutes journey to the capital Valletta, this was my favourite as Valletta has so much to offer in such a small city there are plenty of open air cafes and restaurants to choose from and the architecture and history of the city is endless. We had a guided tour of the stunning St Johns Cathedral and then took in half an hour screen show of the Malta Experience which gives you so much insight to the history of the island of Malta. Lunch was taken at a restaurant in Valletta called Palazzo Preca Restaurant which had fabulous lamb shanks and fish at reasonable prices.

Had a site inspection of the hotel Pheonicia which is a five star superior hotel just a stones throw from the city of Valletta.

Evening meal was hosted by the Pheonica hotel and after dinner drinks in the lounge bar with a pianist and singer to set the relaxed mood.

Sunday 28 ^th April 2013

Today we were transferred to the south east of the island approximately 25 minutes to a beautiful fishing village of Marsaxlokk the village is approached via a long, narrow, straight road with vineyards on both sides. The bay is memorable for the many colourful, traditional fishing boats called luzzu . The painted eyes on these luzzus are believed to protect the boats from danger. Tourists visit the town for the picturesque photo opportunities of the bay filled with colourful fishing boats, many seafood restaurants and the very busy Sunday market that sells everything from fish, local produce and groceries to souvenirs, clothing and footwear.

We were then transferred to Mdina which is the old capital of Malta . Mdina is a medieval walled town situated on a hill in the centre of the island and is often known as the silent city. The town is still confined within its walls, and has a population of just over three hundred and the village of Rabat, which takes its name from the Arabic word for suburb, and has a population of over 11,000.

We took in a site inspection at the boutique hotel Xara Palace which consists of just 27 individually beautifully furnished rooms.

Our last evening meal was hosted at our resident hotel Radisson Blu hotel offering us a buffet meal and a private terrace was provided for ourselves to see the Fireworks Festival at Golden Bay.

Sunday 29 ^th April 2013

After breakfast an early transfer to Malta airport for our flight back to the UK with Easyjet.
